In 1916, the United States Mint was fervently revamping its coinage. By the early 1900s, major gold coins had been revitalized and now it was the turn of silver coins, from nickel to half-dollar, to receive new designs for a brighter future.

Adolph A. Weinman, a renowned sculptor, had prior experience creating public art before submitting his designs for American coin competitions at the United States Mint. His Walking Liberty and depiction of a Winged Liberty were both accepted by the Mint for coinage.
