The Design
Phillip Nathan originally designed the Britannia design in 1987. The image has been updated, but Britannia’s depiction has remained as a warrior standing in the fierce wind and crashing waves, wearing a Corinthian helmet, holding a trident and the Union Jack Shield.
The first circle surrounding the image has micro-engravings that read “Decus et Tutamen.” The second encircling features the coin’s issuance, weight, purity, and metal content description through “‘BRITANNIA’ 202_’ 1/10 oz’ 999’ FINE’ SILVER.’”
Martin Jenninng is the artist who signs King Charles III’s official portrait, the new obverse. The left-profile bust is encircled by “CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D - 20 PENCE,” which stands for the King’s name, the Latin initials to “By the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith,” and the coin’s monetary denomination.
Anti Counterfeiting
Four anti counterfeiting measures can be found in the reverse design. The first anticounterfeiting measure is the micro-text “Decus et Tutamen,” which means “an ornament and a safeguard” surrounding Britannia’s depiction.
The image in focus on the lower left changes from a padlock to a trident as you move the coin. The movement also brings life to the waves in the background because of the surface animation. Finally, Britannia’s shield is imprinted with tincture lines alternating patterns.
