The design of the 1/4 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round is a tribute to the design of the original Aztec Calendar and the last Aztec emperor of Tenochtitlan, Cuauhtémoc.
On the obverse, a highly detailed inscription of the Aztec calendar is featured. The Golden State Mint demonstrates their skill and attention to detail in this design, as it has been carefully inscribed to highlight each and every little detail of the original Aztec Calendar’s design.
The calendar was designed to not only track days and time but also the positive or negative spirituality of each day. Each 52 year, 365-day cycle is broken down in eighteen 20-day cycles that align with a separate 260-day rotation with a 13-day cycle to give every year and day a unique name and number. This system is extremely complex and impressive to see minted on a 1/4 oz silver round.
On the reverse, a portrait of the last Aztec emperor of Tenochtitlan, Cuauhtémoc is featured. Widely celebrated as an Aztec hero, Cuauhtémoc is commonly honored in statues and coins throughout Mexico. The name Cuauhtémoc translates to “one who has descended like an eagle”. Above the portrait, “QUARTER TROY OUNCE” has been inscribed. Underneath, “Cuauhtémoc” and “999 FINE SILVER” have been inscribed.
